if i had to guess, i would say that today is going to be an excellent one.
and speaking of today being great – dan returns home from his honeymoon this afternoon! it’ll be great to have him back in town – i’ve missed him! lots to catch up on.
another reason i’m certain today will be lovely is because yesterday i had a mini breakthrough in a song idea i’ve been working on for a while now. had a couple pieces i really liked, but it was still missing the glue to hold it all together… don’t want to jinx it, but i think it showed up yesterday – i’m excited to see where it takes me. those little breakthroughs remind me of a playing a slot machine… you throw heaps of money (time) into it, hoping to win big (write something nice)… and once in a while, amidst all of the frustration, the machine will pay out $20 (a 20 sec. piece of music) and even though you’ve spent $500 (500 hours), it gets you real excited to keep going! thankfully songwriting isn’t wired into some money thieving casino machine, but there’s a similarity there, i’m sure.
well, i hope your long holiday weekend is coming along beautifully!
i’ll leave you with a video of what might be the worst fireworks display ever (or the best, depending on how you look at it…) i used to be terrified of fireworks when i was younger… i can only imagine the terror the kids must’ve felt while attending this “display”…
only in wisconsin. (i say that with love, of course.) but goodness, i think this display also broke another world record for worst-for-the-environment fireworks display ever. the earth shed a few tears that 4th of july, for sure…
recently went to see the film “please give.” i wouldn’t say i fell in love with it, but i enjoyed many aspects of it a lot. it’s the type of film that as an audience member, rather than being told a story with a start and an end, you’re just witnessing a short segment of these different characters lives. almost like tapping into a private phone call. which for this movie, i liked that perspective a lot. interesting and completely believable characters. very, very well acted. some really sweet moments appropriately tucked in here and there. if i was pressed to give it a rating, i’d give it a 7 out of 10.
i went into the theater with very little knowledge of what to expect and i left with lots of thinking going on in my head. i like it when that happens… when a film makes you think well outside of it’s hour and half (or so) length. whether or not you even loved it, it’s well-made art if it sneaks inside your head like that.
totally unrelated – i installed our pro tools 8 upgrade this afternoon and it looks quite nice. it’s silly how much cosmetic change makes such an impact! i wouldn’t call the pro tools 8 software beautiful by any means, but it’s much nicer to look at than it was before… which is nice, because it’s something we stare at for days on end. and there’s some fancy new features that will come in handy once i learn about ‘em today.
